GENDER EXPRESSION
"Gender is a figment of our imagination" |
From the moment we're born we're taught that there's only two genders. A boy, and a girl. We're taught to operate in society's norms of how to act like a "girl" or how to act like a "boy," however; there is no actual representation in gender or what "it" is besides genetalia, and the little floating bubbles that were construed by society of how one looks or represented. Gender is a figment of our imagination. We're constantly placed in this hypothetical bubble created by society as to what is for girls or what is for boys. "You can't wear that, you'll look like a boy,""if you're a boy and you cry, that makes you gay." Gender Expression is defined through individuality. Gender Expression does not just corresponds with just the LGBT community or is determined by your signed gender at birth. Gender Expression is expression through self identity, that can but is NOT limited to being expressed physically through appearance or even through emotions. My investigation focuses on breaking that hypothetical barricade within Gender Expression. This will be demonstrated through a variety of ways, whether it's from using clothing, makeup, or just creating a narrative using emotion through my muse. Throughout this body of works, you will see a lot of "physical" traits used to construe my idea of breaking that barricade, to a very contrast demonstration narrating my idea of self identity. |
